New Celebrity Barbie: Aishwarya Rai!

Aishwarya Rai, one of the beautiful actress of Bollywood may soon be potrayed as a Barbie Doll. Aishwarya Rai is not only the most popular actress of India but also she is well known fame to the entire world. Beauty queen-turned-actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan could be the next to join the league of female Hollywood celebrities like Beyonce Knowles and Elizabeth Taylor to have the next ‘celebrity Barbie’ doll modelled on her.

Representatives of the 35-year-old were reported to be in negotiations with Barbie’s manufacturer Mattel as it plans to give the iconic doll a Bollywood face and sell throughout India. If the deal happens, the new Barbie will have Aishwarya’s green eyes and wear outfits created by top Indian designers.

Aishwarya Rai, the georgeous actress will soon be a Barbie and all Aishwarya fans and the whole of India will be Happy if this happens as said.

How cute can a fashion event get? Apparently, very, very cute... if you’ve got Barbie kicking it off, as the Lakme Fashion Week Fall/Winter’09 that starts in Mumbai today does. At 1 pm, the world’s most popular and admired fashion icon celebrates her 50th anniversary by showcasing the best in fashion design talent across the globe.

Yes, after making an unforgettable style statement at New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Barbie will now walk the ramp at India’s foremost fashion event. This show called Barbie – All Doll’d Up! is the style sweetheart’s first in India and will showcase real-size, Barbie-inspired looks put together by renowned fashion designers from across the country including Wendell Rodricks, Neeta Lulla, Shantanu & Nikhil, Vikram Phadnis and others.

Barbie boasts five decades of fashion heritage, working with more fashion designers than any other brand in the world, and in the process becoming a star admired by major couturiers who dream to get their names associated with the most popular doll in history.

Taking off from New York, the world famous brand invited Indian designers to a contest to celebrate Barbie’s 50th birthday by creating designs with the doll as their muse. The winning designer (who will be announced today at the fashion show) was then invited to design the finale outfit of the event for a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll... and walking the ramp as the showstopper wearing that outfit today will be Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif.

Katrina is delighted with the honour, more so because a Barbie doll bearing likeness to the Bollywood actress is in the pipeline and will come as a great surprise to the world sometime soon. “Every girl at some point of time in her childhood has played with a Barbie doll,” admitted Katrina, “and so have I. She makes a sweet, fun and lively companion.”

It is true, Barbie is the world’s only brand that allows girls to imagine themselves as a mermaid to a movie star, a fairy to a fashionista, and a princess to a president, serving a purpose to girls as they try on different personalities, careers, and explore the world and all of its possibilities without ever having to leave home. She allows girls to dream beyond and know that a woman has choices, having herself represented more than 100 careers in her lifetime.

Aishwarya slipped away from Barbie dreams

‘I am a Barbie girl’ – Well, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan would no more sing these words. Of course, it wouldn’t be a favorite song for this girl anymore. Quite puzzling, isn’t? The World’s beauteous woman often crowned for various titles was approached to be endorsed as Barbie Girl. But due to her professional commitments she had to postpone their Endeavour. At the turn of the century by which time Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had become a house hold name the world over Mattel again proposed that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan endorse the Barbie doll but as her prior commitments stretched her for time she had to decline yet again. The turn of the millennium special edition celebrity doll was to feature Naomi Campbell etc .

Here again on the eve of the favorite doll’s 50th Anniversary, Aishwarya is still the most sought after celebrities to be impersonated as a celebrity Barbie. Mattel was also keen to have her walk the ramp on Lakme Fashion Week ‘Barbie dolled up’ in a winning design as Single Likeness Barbie, which would be unveiled and auctioned for a charity of her choice. Conversely due to her prior commitments (filming of Vipul Shah’s Action Replay & her being honored Padmashree) she opted out of the event as she did not want to inconvenience the producer/director anymore while taking time out to this event.

Rai sprung to fame when she won the Miss World contest in 1994, which spawned a lucrative modelling and acting career.

She made the transition to Hollywood with starring roles in Bride and Prejudice, Mistress of Spices, The Last Legion and more recently in Pink Panther 2 alongside Steve Martin.

She became the face of L'Oréal cosmetics in 2005 and is one of only two Indian film stars to have their waxwork image displayed at Madame Tussaud's.

She formally became a member of Bollywood's "royal family" when she married actor Abhishek Bachchan, the son of India's most popular star Amitabh Bachchan.

Now she is set to join the ranks of Hollywood immortals and pop divas like Beyoncé Knowles, Elizabeth Taylor, and Diana Ross, who have all had "celebrity Barbies" modelled on them.

Rai's representatives were yesterday reported to be in negotiations with the toy manufacturer as it plans to transform the iconic doll into a Bollywood star and sell it throughout India.

If successful, the new Barbie will have Miss Rai's striking green eyes, and wear outfits created by India's top designers.
