Amitabh Bachchan is India's most influential actor

Amitabh Bachchan first gained popularity in the early 1970s while pursuing his career in acting. Today, he is one of the most prominent figures in the history of Indian cinema.

The trademark deep baritone voice, the tall, brooding persona, and intense eyes, made Amitabh Bachchan the ideal "Angry Young Man", thereby changing the face of Hindi cinema. He has won numerous major awards in his career, including three National Film Awards and twelve Filmfare Awards. He holds the record for most number of Best Actor nominations at the Filmfare Awards.

to acting, Bachchan has worked as a playback singer, film producer and television presenter. Amitabh also tried his hand in politics and was elected member of the Indian Parliament from 1984 to 1987 after the death of Mrs. Gandhi. Amitabh decided to take a break from his acting career in 1992, and launched Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited which was a multi-faceted commercial enterprise. This is hard to imagine at that time how he survived but again he proved that he is not an ordinary man who live and die.

In the year 2000, Bachchan stepped up to host India's adaptation of the British television game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? entitled, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. As it did in most other countries where it was adopted, the program found immediate success. At the same time, he also made a comeback with the Bollywood scene and redefined his position in Indian cinema. Amitabh emerged again as a winner and slapped the critics who declared him "finished".

Even in this age roles are written for him. Every film maker is dreaming to cast him in his/her film. He was declared as Star of the Millennium by BBC poll, by Stardust and even at the survey for statue at Madam Tusad.

Catch Amitabh Bachchan live in Malaysia at the Youth Engagement Summit 2009 on the 16 & 17 November.

Big B and Abhi together again

Now, here’s a real shocker. Grapevine is abuzz that movie ‘Paa’ has Amitabh Bachchan playing the son of Abhishek Bachchan !

Director R Balakrishnan (known as Balki), who wove a different magic with his funny love story between a young woman and a sexagenarian man in Cheeni Kum , is again trying some different dimensions of human relationships in his next movie Pa .

As the sweet, endearing title Paa (fondly used by Aishwarya Rai to address her father-in-law, Amitabh) suggests, the movie is about father-son relationship.

While it’s safe to assume that a film on such a theme will have Abhishek playing the son to Big B, the case with ‘Paa’ is shockingly inverse. Reports have it that Amitabh plays the son, while Abhishek plays the father. The film’s story is about a man who ages at a faster pace and thus looks much older then his actual age.

Perhaps that explains why Mr. Bachchan has to sit for three-hour make-up sessions before shooting the film and three hours more to remove the make-up after the shoot is over. However, Big B’s look and the plot of the film are being guarded zealously by Balki.

What is known, however, is that the script intrigued Mr. Bachchan so much that he immediately said yes to the project. Abhishek came on board later. The movie also features Vidya Balan in female lead.

While Balki refuses to reveal anything about the film’s story, if Big B indeed plays the son to Abhishek, it might go on to prove the famous quote by William Wordsworth: “The child is father of the man”.
